Choose your dumbbell setup
-
Rubber hex dumbbells: Fixed weights with a hexagonal head shape. Check each listing for the weight and whether the price covers one dumbbell or a pair.
-
Adjustable dumbbells: Change the load on a handle instead of storing a separate dumbbell for every weight. Compare the adjustment system, available increments and maximum load.
-
Dumbbell packages: Compare multiple weights together. Check the number of pairs, the weight range and whether storage is included.
Singles, pairs and sets: check what you are buying
A single dumbbell is one item. A pair contains two. A set or package may contain several weights, adjustable components or a rack, depending on the listing. Read the included items before comparing prices.
Also check whether a listed weight refers to each dumbbell or the total package. For example, two dumbbells weighing 10kg each have a combined weight of 20kg. Package totals should not be confused with the weight of each individual dumbbell.
How to choose a dumbbell set
List the exercises you want to do and the weights you currently use. Compare the lightest and heaviest options, the steps between weights and room for future additions. For shared gyms, consider how many people need access to the same weights at once.
Measure your storage space as well as the area needed for training. If a package includes a rack, check its dimensions. If buying storage separately, confirm that it accommodates the shape and size of your chosen dumbbells.
Dumbbell buying questions
Should I choose fixed or adjustable dumbbells?
Fixed dumbbells let you change weights by selecting another dumbbell. Adjustable models let you change the load on the handle. Compare storage space, adjustment time, weight increments and the manufacturer's usage instructions.
Does every dumbbell set include a rack?
No. Included equipment varies by package. Check the product description and included items rather than assuming that every item pictured is supplied.
Can I add more weights later?
With fixed dumbbells, you can select additional weights as your setup grows. For adjustable systems, confirm compatibility and the manufacturer's maximum load before buying extra components.
